Tanabu High School Students Visit Port Angeles from Mutsu City, JapanLucy Edwards, Port Angeles School District organizer for the upcoming Tanabu High School visit, has announced the delegation from Mutsu City, Japan will arrive Thursday, October 5 to Port Angeles and will stay with student hosts until Monday, October 9.  The visit marks the 22nd anniversary of the Port Angeles-Mutsu City sister city and sister school exchanges.

The Japanese students will attend class and activities with high school student hosts and visit with student pen pals at Jefferson Elementary.  They will have opportunities to tour downtown Port Angeles and the natural surroundings of the Olympic Peninsula; tour Victoria, British Columbia; and take part in planned activities with host families.

Student Pen Pal Program
“Every second through sixth grade student that has been at Jefferson over time has been involved in the Mutsu Pen Pal program,” recounts Joyce Mininger, principal at Jefferson Elementary.  “Each year, the Port Angeles Education Foundation funds the postage and supplies that allow our younger students to communicate regularly with high school students learning English in our sister city, Mutsu.”

“When those pen pals come to visit our Jefferson students it is one of the highlights of the year,” continues Mininger.  “It opens the eyes of our students to another culture, another community, and the commonality shared through communication other than just words.”

“Our students learn how to write their names in Japanese, create origami animals, and yes, even eat a little Japanese candy.  They are so thrilled to meet their pen pals,” says Mininger.  “I am overwhelmed annually by the impact of this partnership on our Jefferson community, and so thankful for the opportunity for our students.”

Partnership for Exchange Program
Port Angeles School District, City of Port Angeles, and Peninsula International Relations Association representatives have worked together with Mutsu City schools and organizations on behalf of this visit and previous exchanges.

From all students and staff in the Port Angeles School District, we wish to welcome the visiting Tanabu High School students and staff!
