Representatives from Roosevelt Elementary including principal Michelle Olsen, third grade teacher Erica Kuch, head custodian Dena Duce and third grade teacher Jennifer Reynolds talked on the air with Todd Ortloff about being named a 2017 School of Distinction. This distinction marks five years of improvement in test scores, placing Roosevelt Elementary in the top 5% of schools in Washington State.

Roosevelt Elementary students Becca Manson and Jaidence Blore from Terri Longin’s fourth grade class are working on a Genius Hour project to eliminate single-use plastic bags from the City of Port Angeles. They have already spoken at a City Council meeting and at Peninsula College as part of a panel group.

On January 10, nine Science Club students attended Donna Nelson’s lecture The Science of Breaking Bad: A Look Behind the Hollywood Screen at the University of Washington campus in Seattle. PAHS science teacher John Gallagher thanks the YMCA and Port Angeles Education Foundation for their support, making the field trip possible.

Students at Stevens Middle School recently had the chance to experience a taste of culture from the far east. Visitors from sister city Mutsu, Japan, hosted by Stevens Middle School families, demonstrated some of their customs during a culture fair in the school library on Monday, January 8.

At Port Angles High School, Pam Helpenstell’s Open Leadership Class paid homage to the late Martin Luther King Jr. by focusing on a particular character trait each day during the week. On Monday, January 15, there is no school and the district office will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

Stevens Middle School Students’ Dollar Drive to Fight Cancer

Stevens students and staff collected over $700, a record, in the “Bring a Dollar” event to add to annual local firefighters’ fundraising Stairclimb efforts to beat cancer. This is the fifth year Stevens students have participated with local firefighters in the Seattle Columbia Center Climb.

January is School Board Appreciation Month! Sincere thanks to our school board directors for their tireless efforts on behalf of PASD students: President Sarah Methner, Vice President Sandy Long, Director Joshua Jones and Director Cindy Kelly. At the Jan. 4 Board meeting, Superintendent Marc Jackson read aloud a proclamation from Governor Jay Inslee to the directors and presented each with a certificate of appreciation.
